The Spaces in Between

How Art Sets the Tone in Transitional Spaces.

Insights at the Intersection of ART x DESIGN Column / Edition 4 (in collaboration with Kelly-McKenna Gallery)

Hallways and entries are often seen as spaces to pass through.

A connection between rooms.
A moment of transition.

Rarely a destination.
Often left undesigned.

And yet, they are the first, last, and most frequent impressions of a home.

This is where atmosphere takes shape.
Where everything starts to unfold.
Where art can define the experience of a space.

When art is treated as an asset and integrated with intention, even a transitional space becomes more than a passage. It becomes a moment of presence.

Here are three ways to approach art in hallways and entry spaces:

  • Setting the Tone
A thoughtfully chosen piece of artwork can define the atmosphere of an entire home. Placed in an entry or along a hallway, it offers a preview of the personality and purpose that unfolds beyond. The right piece becomes both a focal point and a point of connection, creating a memorable impression and meaningful return.

  • Scale and Proportion
The scale of artwork should always relate to the expanse of the space, especially its width. In narrower hallways, pieces need to remain visually legible from a closer viewing distance, as they are often experienced in motion. Larger or more open entry areas can often support bolder statements establishing presence. But proportions should always feel intentional rather than imposed while not competing with other design elements.

  • Rhythm and Resonance
The most successful artwork in transitional spaces is rarely the one that matches everything else, but the one that resonates. Placed strategically, whether at the end of a hallway, along a sightline, or within a sequence, it should invite attention naturally. Think of it as a sequence rather than a single moment, where art creates rhythm and progression as you move through the space. When artwork and spatial design meet in alignment, a passage elevates into an experience.

Often overlooked, these spaces carry some of the greatest untapped potential in a home.

Through a curated approach, a hallway or entry becomes more than a space in between. It becomes part of the narrative of the home, setting the tone for how it is experienced, remembered, and lived in.
